Your GP looks after your overall health, including your mental health and it is your GP who makes referrals to specialist mental health services in most cases. It is your responsibility to make sure that you look after your mental wellbeing, and your GP can help you in doing this. If you are beginning to have difficulties relating to your mental wellbeing, you should always go talk to your GP or another health care professional.

If you feel that you need to speak to someone about any difficulties that you may be facing, and do not wish to talk to your GP, you can visit our interactive map (link) for details of how to self refer for talking therapy through the NHS. The map details contacts and locations for Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services in London.

If there are no IAPT services in your borough yet, there are other ways to find help.

There is a list of accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapists at www.babcp.com some of whom provide therapy through the private sector.

You can also find an on line version of CBT at www.LivingLifetotheFull.com

If you would like to see a counsellor, you will find a list of accredited counsellors at www.bacp.co.uk

It may be more convenient to seek further information and support over the phone, for an A-Z of national and local help lines (some of which are available 24 hours) please see www.mhhp.org.uk

You may also find it useful to visit the BBC Headroom site. There is a lot of information there about mental health, the different problems you might experience and ways you might overcome them.
