Bipolar disorder: the ’stalking beast’

When I heard about the mood disorders study I got in touch straight away. I was diagnosed with bipolar in the mid-70s when I was 17. My symptoms first manifested themselves after my father died, when I was just 14. I was fostered at 15, and first sectioned aged 16. From then on I was on the psychiatric merry-go-round – hospitals, therapeutic communities, halfway houses – until I was 28.

Recession creates depression – 12-04-2010

Poverty charity Elizabeth Finn Care and Roehampton University have revealed new research highlighting a staggering rise in mental health illness among UK workers, directly attributable to worries related to the economic downturn.

The study shows that an alarming 47% of people have experienced depressive symptoms during the recession – some four-to-five times higher than levels recorded amongst the general population before the slump.

MENTAL HEALTH FALLOUT: Stress of job loss can trigger wide range of reactions, from anxiety to depression

Losing a job can be emotional, but those who are unemployed may face a host of anxiety-producing situations on top of being out of work.

These include the frustration of not being able to find another job, having to pay the same number of bills with less income, losing identity and struggling to feel valuable, and dealing with the stigma of being unemployed — all of which can lead to serious mental issues.

Bipolar risk greater for bright children

“You don’t have to be bipolar to be a genius – but it helps,” according to The Independent. The newspaper said that a Swedish study of over 700,000 adults found that those who scored top grades at school were “four times more likely to develop bipolar disorder than those with average grades”.
