Tips on how to discuss your needs

The best time to speak to your manager or employer is not when you are experiencing a crisis, or when things are getting on top of you.

No one knows your condition better than you do.  Making sure that you pay attention to your mental health will make it possible for you to spot issues or situations that may pose you challenges in the future.

If you workplace has regular appraisals or supervision sessions, these can be the perfect time to raise any concerns that you have.  If not, it is best to ask your manager or employer if it is possible to speak to them in private.

Expressing what you need for your mental wellbeing shouldn’t be a trauma

Many people worry about speaking to others about their mental wellbeing.

People often worry about being judged because they experience mental health difficulties.  They fear that others might see them as weak or strange, or that others will see them as less able to do their jobs.

Things are changing.  Employers are becoming more aware of the needs of their workforce, including the need to help staff look after their mental wellbeing.  After all, we all have mental health needs no matter who we are.

Your health and wellbeing is up to you

It is important to all of us to look after our mental wellbeing, just as it is to look after our physical wellbeing.

We should not have unrealistic expectations of ourselves, but at the same time, we should welcome the challenges that our working life puts before us.

It can be tempting to avoid any new or potentially stressful situations if we have experienced mental health difficulties in the past, or currently experience them.  This approach may seem to help us in the short term but often leads to frustration or feeling demoralised in the longer term.  Work is challenging for us all sometimes, but it is overcoming these challenges that gives us a feeling of achievement.
