Tips on how to discuss your needs
The best time to speak to your manager or employer is not when you are experiencing a crisis, or when things are getting on top of you.
No one knows your condition better than you do. Making sure that you pay attention to your mental health will make it possible for you to spot issues or situations that may pose you challenges in the future.
If you workplace has regular appraisals or supervision sessions, these can be the perfect time to raise any concerns that you have. If not, it is best to ask your manager or employer if it is possible to speak to them in private.

Any employer benefits from a well-motivated workforce. Employers should always support their staff, deal with their concerns and care for their wellbeing.
Being positive about mental wellbeing, and encouraging an open and non judgemental approach to the challenges that people may face will result in better motivated staff, who will value their employer more.
The feeling that a company or organisation cares for its staff is a significant factor in attracting staff with a high commitment level and in its overall level of standing in the wider community.

The most effective method of making your workplace healthier is to support managers in being sensitive to the mental wellbeing needs of the workforce.
A good starting place for this is the Shift Line Manager’s Resource, a toolkit for managers with guidance regarding all aspects of mental health in the workplace.
Your organisation should think about developing a stress management or wellbeing policy if it does not already have one.

We can all do more to ensure that we look after our mental health and wellbeing. Companies should try to foster an environment where emotional needs are valued and where stress is minimised as much as is possible.
Managers can have a definitive role in this by promoting positive mental wellbeing and helping people to make healthy decisions.

In most cases, it should be possible to deal with an employee’s mental wellbeing in the workplace through ordinary management tools such as planning sessions, appraisals or informal chats.
Always be aware that someone may be worried about being judged, or that they will be sacked or removed from their position. Also, you should be open from the start about how confidential your chat is, and be clear about who else will be informed of it. You should reassure them that any personal information will be confidential, but that you may need to speak to other members of staff with their consent about certain aspects of it.
You should give someone you are concerned about the maximum opportunity to express their concerns in their own way by asking open questions such as:

Good management is key, as is developing an overall positive workplace attitude to mental wellbeing.
Different people have different needs, and different conditions can require different ways of helping.
As an employer or manager, the objective is always to minimise the distress experienced by your staff and to minimise the impact their illness has upon their productivity. In almost all cases, people who experience mental health difficulties while working can, with the right support and interventions, continue in their work.
The aim is make sure that your employee can continue to contribute to your company and its success while also finding effective ways of dealing with any distress that they are suffering.

One of the single biggest areas where businesses and organisations can bring about a healthier workplace environment is by considering and implementing policy and raising awareness about mental wellbeing.
There are two equally important elements to making sure that everyone experiences mental wellbeing in the workplace.
The first is policy and procedure. These are the organisational elements that a company can put in place to set the rules for how things should be done. Law will require some of these rules and policies and others will be led by what kind of company the organisation is and what challenges its workforce faces.

The Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health has produced one of the most in-depth studies into the business effects of mental ill health on business productivity and profit. The following is a summary of some of the findings of the report Mental Health at Work: Developing the business case
Every workplace in the UK is affected by mental distress and mental ill health.
At any one time, one in six UK workers will be experiencing difficulties with their mental wellbeing such as depression, anxiety or problems with stress.
