NHS cuts threaten talking therapies for psychiatric patients

Half a million people with serious mental illness could lose access to counselling and other services as the NHS struggles to make unprecedented efficiency savings, campaigners warn.

Despite manifesto pledges from the three main political parties to increase access to “talking therapies” in the health service, Monitor, the independent regulator for NHS Foundation Trusts, has written to all the organisations that it oversees, asking them to plan for deeper cuts than previously forecast from next month.

Improving workplace health and wellbeing for NHS staff

Improving staff health and wellbeing produces benefits such as reduced staff turnover, reduced accidents and injuries, increased productivity and reduced absenteeism. For NHS organisations, it is also associated with improved patient satisfaction ratings, decreased MRSA rates and better annual health check ratings.

To support NHS employers improve their staff’s health and wellbeing, Working for Wellness has contributed to a report, Health Promotion in the NHS Workplace: A Framework for Action in London, and produced a series of six posters which can be used in the workplace to promote physical activity as a means of improving mental wellbeing, complementing the report’s recommendations.

Mental health at work: new NHS Employers initiative

NHS Employers launched a national campaign today (3 March 2010) to end stigma against NHS workers suffering from mental ill health. The campaign, ‘Open your Mind’, will also work to improve employment rates for those with mental health conditions and help NHS trusts create better working environments for all staff. Meditation on prescription: charity urges new remedy for depression

Meditation techniques should be widely available on prescription, say experts today, pointing to evidence that emptying the mind is more likely to help people out of the cycle of recurrent depression than pills. Meditation may for some evoke images of Buddhist chanting and the Beatles bedecked with flowers in their period of devotion to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, but today a mental health charity is launching a campaign to make “mindfulness” courses based on meditation available widely on the NHS.

Abuse relief for those who care for mentally ill

A BOLD new program has been launched to reduce verbal and physical abuse experienced by staff at West London Mental Health Trust.

The trust, based in Uxbridge Road, is introducing a new creative workshop which aims to increase self esteem and respect for fellow patients and staff. Health bosses hope it will create a sense of responsibility for people’s own actions and, ultimately, a reduction in incidents.

NHS stress phone service launched

An NHS helpline to help people struggling with stress has been launched by the government.

The service is available across England in response to concerns about the mounting problems people will face in coming months because of the economy.
